What are the Different Types of Burn Injuries?

If you or a loved one has suffered burn injuries, you know the excruciating pain and devastating financial burden they cause. Unfortunately, that is only the beginning. Recovering from catastrophic burns can be one of the most painful, intense, and long recoveries there is, and the disfigurement afterward lasts for a lifetime.

A burn injury often results from an energy transfer to the body, which can be thermal, chemical, or electrical contact.

  • Thermal burns are caused by external heat sources — including hot metals, scalding liquids, steam, and flames — that raise the temperature of the skin and tissues, causing charring or tissue cell death.
  • Chemical burns are caused by strong acids, alkalis, detergents, or solvents encountering the skin or eyes.
  • Electrical burns are caused by contact with an alternating or direct current.

When burn injuries rise to the level of third-degree burns, they can be life-threatening and often require skin grafts. Skin grafts replace damaged tissue with healthy skin from another uninjured part of the person’s body. Unfortunately, burn injuries are exceptionally vulnerable to infection, and may require long-term antibiotic treatments, and additional medical therapies that may include additional fluids administered by IV, to keep the individual’s blood pressure steady and prevent shock and dehydration.

If you have suffered burn injuries because of another person or party’s negligence, we want to hear your story, and help you determine the origin of the incident, why it happened, and who may be liable for your extensive medical care, lost wages, and the additional expenses associated with your long recovery. Contact us today to learn more about your legal rights and options to pursue a burn injury claim in Georgia.

What are the Most Common Causes of Burn Injuries in Georgia?

Burn injury survivors often suffer these devastating injuries during catastrophic incidents that they never saw coming.

Some of the most common causes of burn injuries include, but are not limited to:

  • Defective automotive products that cause explosions or fires after a crash.
  • Defective household / consumer products, including heating devices, pressure cookers, lithium-ion batteries, charging devices, water heaters, and household chemicals.
  • Electrical currents from faulty wiring or open currents.
  • Thermal or chemical exposure at an industrial facility or worksite.
  • Unintentionally or intentionally set fires.

If you think that your situation was more than a mishap, you may be right. We will listen to your story and chase down every lead to discover what and who caused your injuries. We will do everything we can to make sure that you receive compensation for your loss.

With proper treatment, most first- and second-degree burns can heal over a few weeks. However, people recovering from third-degree burns need physical therapy to maintain joint mobility and improve function. Often, the long-term impact of burn injuries includes scarring, disfigurement, and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression after the burn event. Each of these circumstances requires long-term medical care, rehabilitation, and therapy to move forward.
